‘Coolest Celebration on Earth™’ To Move Festivities for One Year from Rice Park to Kellogg Mall Park
The 133rd Saint Paul Winter Carnival is moving blocks – and not just those made of ice. The Saint Paul Festival and Heritage Foundation announced Thursday that many signature events and attractions for the 2019 Saint Paul Winter Carnival will move to Kellogg Mall Park (62 Kellogg Blvd. E, St. Paul, Minn.). This temporary move accommodates the ongoing work to renovate Rice Park. The Carnival will return to Rice Park in 2020. The Winter Carnival will be held Jan. 24 – Feb. 3, 2019.
Located just a few blocks from Rice Park, Kellogg Mall Park is situated along the Mississippi River on Kellogg Avenue between Robert and Wabasha Streets. The decision to move temporarily to the new location was made after it was clear renovation work in Rice Park would not allow events to be held there until the spring of 2019.
“For more than a century, the Winter Carnival has maintained an amazing annual tradition in Saint Paul,” said Jennifer Tamburo, Board Chair of the Saint Paul Festival and Heritage Foundation. “This year, we’ll have a new, temporary home that will bring our celebration closer to the Mississippi River. It is a chance to look at new and exciting ways to stage and plan the events and attractions that visitors to Saint Paul expect from the Coolest Celebration on Earth.”
“Not only is Saint Paul fortunate to be home to the Winter Carnival, we are also lucky to have so many great parks that can accommodate the events, ice carvings and other attractions,” said Saint Paul City Council Member Rebecca Noecker who represents downtown Saint Paul. “It will give us a different way to experience Carnival and I am looking forward to seeing the amazing ice carvings next to our downtown riverfront. Each year the Carnival continues to entertain and I am confident this will continue in 2019.”
The Saint Paul Winter Carnival have worked closely with the Saint Paul Parks and Recreation Department to research and confirm the new location.
“Saint Paul Parks and Recreation and the Saint Paul Winter Carnival have had a long-standing partnership surrounding the annual winter tradition in Rice Park,” said Mike Hahm, Saint Paul Parks and Recreation Director. “Due to preplanned construction, Rice Park is unavailable this season, but we are confident that Kellogg Mall Park will serve as an equally great option for this year’s festivities. We look forward to continuing the tradition back at Rice Park in 2020.”
Festivities such as the Ice Carving Competition, the Winter Carnival Music Series, the Ice Bar, and other attractions will now be held on Kellogg Mall Park. Kellogg Mall Park features two fountains, an arbor, and beautiful views of the Mighty Mississippi, Harriet Island, and Raspberry Island. It is historically significant as the location of the chapel that gave the city its name and is considered the “birthplace” of Saint Paul.
