Visitors are welcome to drop by the Snow Park to see how the giant snow blocks are created. An astonishing amount of activity is packed into these two days, involving a lot of heavy equipment. (For safety’s sake, visitors are asked to stay well clear of the activity and observe from a distance.) If you’d like to get closer to the action, volunteers are needed to help build the blocks. Ice harvesting for the 2017 Towers of Boreas in Rice Park will begin bright and early on Saturday, January 21 at Lake Phalen in Saint Paul.  Watch as professional ice harvesters cut and float ice to the conveyor belt and volunteers from the Saint Paul Building and Construction Trades load them into trucks and transport them to Rice Park in Saint Paul. The Moon Glow Pedestrian Parade will officially kick off the first day of Carnival, January 26, in downtown Saint Paul. Minnesota State Snow Sculpting Competition

During this three-day competition, three-member teams transform 8' x 8' x 8' blocks of compacted snow into amazing works of art using only hand tools. The winning team receives $1,000, a trophy, and the opportunity to represent Minnesota at the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition held in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. National winners advance to the International Snow Sculpting Competition held throughout the upper Midwest and Canada.
