Rice Park

Saint Paul’s beautiful and historic Rice Park acts as center stage for the Saint Paul Winter Carnival. Check out the variety of events and activities to be hosted in Rice Park this year.  These are all free and open to the public unless indicated otherwise.

Ice Sculpture Garden

One of Winter Carnival’s signature events, the ever-sparkly ice sculpture garden will take over Rice Park during regular park hours.  The beautiful masterpieces are created by area artists using an array of tools including knives, chainsaws and other tools.  See the artists at work (and competing for prizes and bragging rights) the first Thursday through Sunday of Carnival.

The displays are well-lit at night and are a great time to be downtown Saint Paul to take in other activities. Endless photo opportunities are available during the competition, as well as with the completed creations. The creations are removed when Saint Paul Winter Carnival ends – so be sure to stop by to see them while you can! Want to be a contestant in our Ice Carving competitions? All three Winter Carnival parades — the Grand Day (Saturday, January 25) and Torchlight (Saturday, February 1)— end in Rice Park. Plus, join us for the post Torchlight Parade “Overthrow of Boreas” at the steps of the James J. Hill Library for a spectacular part of the Winter Carnival tradition!

Ice Bars

The Ice Bars will return to refresh Carnival-goers throughout the daily activities. Try Coppola Diamond Series Two Pinot,  Grigio, and Noir in Cans; Coppola Hot Mulled Wine; Bud Light; Mich Golden; Goose Island; Stella Cidre for you Cider Lovers; and Winter Carnival’s new Bon & Vic Spiked Seltzer to keep you refreshed and smiling!
